December: finding moments of awe

At nightfall in December, at that blessed in-between hour, when the last seeds of illumination are scattered, and the stars turn on — all at once as if the caretakers of wonder have flown through the heavens sparking the wicks — we too, huddled in our kitchens or circled ‘round our dining room tables, we strike the match. We kindle the flame. We shatter darkness with all the light we can muster. -from The Invitation of December by Barbara Mahany

What does finding awe mean to you? Maybe it’s holding mystery and reverence for something bigger than yourself? Maybe it’s noticing the beauty of ordinary things?

A quick internet search found this dictionary definition of awe: a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. This definition resonates with me. Having respect and wonder for things makes me feel more connected, more alive, and fosters gratitude. Awe helps me savor life, and that’s what I want more of this holiday season.

Let’s sneak tiny moments of awe into our daily life this December. It all starts with noticing. Notice how your body feels when you are enjoying something, like your favorite holiday warm drink. Maybe you feel grounded, inner warmth, cozy, content, stable, a flutter in your gut… the list goes on and on. Here’s a list of sensation words to help you find what resonates with you. Start to notice what things foster awe/joy/connection in you, even for just a few minutes each day. And, slowly, do more of those things, notice more of those things… this practice just might cascade into a richer, more present life.
