the scent of summer

yello honeysuckle flowers against bright green leaves and stems on a summer blue sky day

Honeysuckle has been the scent of my spring and summer here in Nashville. The familiar scent, meeting me during my walks, is steeped in nostalgia. There was a honeysuckle bush lining the chain link fence of my elementary school playground. Friends and I would snack on the sweet nectar in between playing house and singing on the swing sets. Smelling honeysuckle brings me back to those days and helps my body remember the playful spirit of 3rd grade Sandra.

Nature is our constant companion, a friend that has been with us from the very start. Honeysuckle kindly reminded me to play, to run around, to laugh and find freedom among her flowers. What is nature reminding you?

Reflection questions:

  • How has nature been your companion and friend over the years?

  • What aspects of nature, emerging this summer, remind you of past seasons in your life? What parts of yourself is she trying to help you explore?
